When faith is frightening
Written by Peter Youngren on August 14, 2009The following is an article written for the St Catharines Standard Newspaper where Peter is a regular columnist.
Believers in Christ accept that something utterly amazing happened at the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Once and for all, God put the punishment for the world’s sins on Jesus. The phrase “the world’s sins” is all inclusive from Hitler’s murders to a gossiping church member; all was put on Christ. To millions this carries a profound meaning for their daily life, and they believe that what happened at the cross has power to transform people from the inside out. The message of what Christ did is commonly called “Gospel”, which means “Good News”.
Here is where it gets fuzzy. What is the good news all about? Is it good news that if you do your best, God will do the rest? Or is the good news that God gave Jesus as an example of good living, and those who follow Him will be saved? Surprisingly the answer is no on both counts! The most famous verse in the entire Bible simply says, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life”, (John 3:16). There is only one condition, “believe”, nothing about us doing our best, or our attempts to walk in the footsteps of Jesus.
“Believe” is a verb and “faith” is a noun, two sides of the same coin, and two words that to some seem weak and to others even frightening. Why? Because believing puts the focus away from our performance; faith has nothing to do with our effort, our good attitude, diligent studies, or our attempt at impressing God with our humility. Faith is not about what we need to do, but it is simply to put our trust in what God has done for us. We are relying on someone else for the payment of our debt and that can be nerve-wracking. I’m relaxed when I drive my car, but let someone else take the wheels and suddenly my anxiety level rises. Faith frightens some, because it means to rely on another.
Faith is to trust in God’s grace. Grace can have no strings attached to it, it must be free; it has nothing to do with bargains, or the idea of “you do your part and God will do His”. Grace is not a contract, or a negotiated settlement between God and man. If it was, it would depend on each of the contractually bound parties to fulfill their respective obligations. A contract is not rooted in love, but in the performance of those who are party to it. God’s idea is not to transform the world or an individual through a contractual obligation, but through unconditional love. There is no tit for tat, grace is a free gift, and yet it empowers. The unconditional grace and love of God gives us the capacity for genuine moral improvement; without it, all we can muster is polishing the outside. Grace makes us honest, vulnerable, transparent and open to change because of the good God has done for us through Jesus. No need for cover-ups or pretense. After all, we are not trying to prove our own ability; we are trusting in God’s unconditional love. This removes the idea of us earning credits with God. We simply surrender to another, and the good another has done is credited to us. Frightening? Maybe, but also totally liberating. Best of all, faith itself is a gift, not the result of our effort, that way we can’t even take credit for believing. Since it’s all free, why not ask for it? You can, if you want to.

Some preachers love to talk how it’s not about our performance - but about how much God loves us. This is true - I do not dispute that. At the same time, if we profess to understand grace and love and claim to have taken hold of these things through faith, yet in our personal lives there is no reflection of that supposed reality (ie: we treat those around us like crap, are selfish, greedy, lustful, impatient, petulent, abraisive, unloving, etc) - we are decieved. Someone who claims to know Christ yet lives his / her life fulfilling the desires of the flesh is a fraud and a liar, and one not only to those around them but to themselves as well. Our bodies are not our own - we were paid for at a very high price. We are still under law - the law of grace and love. This law puts others before ourselves just as Christ put our needs before His comfort.
Morality does not lead to grace but grace will produce a moral life. We can never earn Gods favour but Gods favour will produce fruit in our lives that is easily identifiable. If the Gospel of grace does not have an effect on how we live our lives in the ‘real world’ then it has had no effect on us at all.

Dear Pastor Peter: I believe Grace is there for us when we repent of our sins. And you are right - there is no sin too grave for God to forgive. God’s Grace is the good news of the gospel for sure. But to say, “Grace MAKES us honest, vulnerable, transparent and open to change because of the good God has done for us through Jesus” is not true. Grace does not MAKE us honest. WE have to make that decision to become honest, vulnerable, transparent and open to change ourselves! WE have to repent, confess our sins, TURN from our wicked ways. THEN we receive that wonderful, marvelous, unmerited GRACE from the finished work of the cross. Jesus said, “Go and sin no more” - not “Do what you like because my grace is there for you.” “Grace makes me honest and transparent?” I think not. Grace is certainly there for when one repents, turns from his wicked ways and receives the CLEANSING power of the grace of God. But he must decide to go and sin no more! Then he will live in the power of having received God’s grace.

Thank God for His gift to set me and all believers free.
I am free indeed, thanks to Christ Jesus and the Father.
Thanks to the Holy Spirit, I am convicted.
It is not about following any of the 613 laws to be righteous and to be near to God. It therefore is certainly not a matter of following the 10 commandments, attending church on Saturdays, making no mistake with His Holy Name, killing no body, stealing no item. . . . you name it and it includes that. All works are cancelled at the cross. I am really free, thanks to God.
We can do everything in Him. But not all things are beneficial; namely enforcing any of the 613 laws. It is not what I have done wrong that bothers the New Covenant. It is not I have done in trusting the requirement of the Old Testament that bothers the New Covenant, and affects its perfection.
Thanks God for freeing me to follow Him in love and peace a little move at a time. - David C S Lim

Like those words-honest, vulnerable, transparent and open to change , No need for cover-ups or pretense. I still remember when I was just getting a glimpse of HIs abundant grace, it really felt like I was Bungee Jumping & very uncomforatble losing control but gradually as I began to rest in his love , the same vulnerability built a tender communion & dependence upon HIM.
I wouldn’t now trade this liberty for anything, the tit for tat life still tries to raise its ugly head sometimes but I am quicker to catch myself than before. Glory to God , I now beleive in his keeping power than in my capabilty to be independent of HIM. VICTORY IS A GIFT & NOT A REWARD.

Faith is just a cliche in today’s Christian world.Grace and faith ought to make people optimistic. Not suspicious, cynical and fault finders and call it ” discernment ” No it is not discernment IT is Called ” paranoia” or “sycosis “
Characteristics mentioned above are the most popular traits in Charismatic, Pentecostal and word faith circle.
I lived in CANADA for about 18 years now, I have never ever met a positive person who calls His/Her self ” a CHRISTIAN”.
Yup, Christians in North America ( exceptionally Mexico & Kenneth Hagin) are the most negative, cynical, fault finders & MOTIVATED BY GUILT & FEAR people.. THAT IS IT! I concluded!

I bless the Lord for faith to believe, because faith pleases God, and I need to believe to see the glory of God. I realize that of myself I have no power to produce neither of these essential elements. I THANK God through Christ for such favours.
It is very plain the scriptures: “Faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God.” If it is by the word of God, then it is not by me. So I simply say, ‘Thank You mighty Word of God, for allowing faith to come to me.’
The Lord had a hard job teaching me how trustworthy He is; but He’s the most excellent Teacher. I now believe God, even for that which seems impossible.
Thank You Jesus!

i was disappointed that you really did not discuss the frightening part of faith, the part where the unseen realm interferes with the physical lives and events around the person of faith where they victimize their loved ones, manipulate the bodies of coworkers and deceive even peaceful elements of creation into doing harm to us and others around us. This spiritual interference with our physical and mental existence can be frightening for some and frustrating for others since it is hard to distinguish when it is good since it often seems obstructive, at least try to explain how the invisible is becoming visible and its wickedness both visible and invisible is real and able to manipulate physical as well as mental events around us and how to handle them

Question for you Pastor Peter.
The dominate religion of Canada is racism.
The ruling class of this country have made racism the religion of this country, and they made themselves the gods of that religion
What do you say about that?

Dear pv,
Praise the Lord. I hope that all is well with you today.
I take it that by “the frightening part of faith” you mean the wiles of the devil and the attacks of principalities and powers, and the wicked works of rulers of darkness, against the believers and those connected to them.
Well firstly, I am going to tell you as the words of God says, “Be not afraid for I (the Lord your God) am with you.” If God is with you, then no spirits of darkness and evil (devils) can harm or conquer you.
However, they are pretty skilful in oppressing Christians who are young, weak in faith and are ignorant of the power of Christ in us.
The way to become empowered and overcome these frightening devilish attacks is to study the words of God, believe the words of God and speak by faith (confess) the words of God. I deliberately said “the words of God” so many times, because therein lies your answer to protecting yourself, family, co-workers and other associates, and all your possessions against satan and the kingdom of darkness - or “the gates of hell,” as Jesus calls it.
For example: Believe and confess this passage (personalized unto you):
“The angel of the Lord encamps around me and delivers me.” (Psalm 34:7)
Also memorize and confess by faith (speak from your lips) Psalm 91 and Psalm 27. To confess by faith simply means that you believe that God, through Jesus Christ, will do for you exactly what the scriptures say.
Wickedness or evil is not devised by God. You should always resist it with the words of God. The word always works, and God is always good.
Put on the whole armour of God, Ephesians 6:10-20, and begin to fight the good fight of faith. If you drop on your needs and cry “JESUS” all demons and satan will flee from you.
One last thing in this warfare there is no discharge. So make up your mind to fight consistently and persistently.
God, our Father, in heaven, please grant PV all the equipping and resources that he needs to be victorious in Your army. Increase his faith in Christ Jesus, and teach him to fight the forces of darkness; and to be confident that the gates of hell cannot prevail against him, according to your words, in Jesus Name I pray, Amen - and it is so Lord Jesus! Thank You, Hallelujah!

St. Paul acknowledges that the crucification is foolishness to the wise and a stumbling block to fear-based religions. He claimed that to approach faith in Jesus by any intellectual or religious means empties the cross of its power.
Fear is easily understood by the human mind and spirit. If the power of the crucifiction is not fear, what about love?
Love is incomprehensible to the mind (evidenced by millions of poems - some of them mine). Certainly love cannot be instilled by threats of divine wrath - the human spirit rejects this (mine does, anyway), but easily accepts love.
Love seems to be smarter than human wisdom, and stronger than the human spirit - both of which are hugely powerful. Could what Jesus did on the cross have been an act of love?
This kind of love could not be human in origin. We receive love from focusing on the crucifiction, and we can share it with others. However, we cannot generate it ourselves, anymore than we can create truth by ourselves.
The truth of God’s love is the gospel (good news). Whatever else our minds and hearts seek to fill themselves with is empty by comparision. The gospel is the ultimate love story, love poem and love song.
Mere mention of the love required to do what Jesus did on the cross humbles my mind and lifts my spirit.
Faith without love is a frightening proposition. Entire civilizations have disappeared by placing their faith elsewhere.

Praise the Lord, Dominic,
It will strengthen you to know that St. Paul says in Galatians 5:6 that faith worketh by love. (KJV)
This means that no matter how much faith a person thinks he has if he has not love, then his faith is vain. You will notice that this sounds mighty familiar to James’ “faith without works is dead.” This is because you cannot love without putting it in action. Your action equals your measure of faith. Therefore, faith, works and love are all interrelated.
Pastor Peter travels the world doing the works of God because he loves God and the unsaved. But he needs faith to accomplish those seemingly impossible tasks, because he cannot do any of it without Jesus. The love of God propels him to do the works, and the word of God gives him the faith to believe that God will get the work done through him.

Dear Sir,
I am Fahim Qaiser from Pakistan . I have studied your web site, and I found
it the most wonderful site to get right to the True Word of God. My suggestion for you is to create your material in my language of Urdu and Punjabi also. It will bring lots of blessings of the Word of God for the Pakistani and Indian Urdu and Punjabi speaking people. For that purpose I as a translator will bring your material into Urdu languages and into Punjabi language as well.
Although it will take your low expenses as well, as fund for the Word of God to reach out to the deserving people. I my self, work on a local radio station also. Many times it becomes difficult for us to keep doing this because of being minorities and because of the lack of the financial resources. I will wait for your response.
Sincerely,
Fahim Qaiser ( Pakistan ).

I have just one question. Do you know how we can tell if we are sowing seeds into a ministry that is false, I have been sending money to a ministry, I will not mention names, but it seems that i am always receiving information in the mail asking for different amounts of donations, and promising me that I will receive financial miracles and healing, so I guess with an ailing spouse, I am vulnerable. Something just doesn’t feel right, so now when I receive anything from this ministry, I do not reply. I trust your ministry because I am a partner of your ministry, and I receive encouraging words about God from you, and I have the option to make a donation or not, and the only strings attached is the Love Of God. You are a true man of God, and I have proof, when my sister received healing from Jesus when you were on the Canada Tour in Peterborough, Ontario Feb 19th, 2010.. Keep doing what you are doing to bring the world to Jesus.

To Sherron: In giving to ministries it should only be as the Lord leads you; and in your heart you should know that you are giving it unto God, as oppose to Man or Ministry; so whether or not you see a physical miracle you will still be at peace. If you ask God who to give to; and how much to give, He’ll tell you. Then do as He says, and leave the rest up to Him. In Malachi, He promises to destroy the devourer (of your seed/offering) for your sake. So ask God and obey His word, no matter what the circumstances look like. You give to this ministry now, but is it in good faith and love… or is it because your sister was healed? You must watch your motives, to make sure that you do not miss your blessings, even after you’ve done the work. I just want you to think about this…

PTL Marion Lee:
Tell me… after you accept… what’s next? Say after you received grace you live another 30, 40, 50 years on the earth, what would your life consist of? You make it sound as if the answer to that question is: “Nothing!” It’s as if you go off and wait in a sterilized plastic bubble for Jesus to return. Truly we did nothing and can do nothing to earn our salvation, but we’re not talking about “salvation” in and of itself… We are talking about “grace.” The two are not entirely synonymous. The grace of God constrained Christ to die for us… We who have accepted that, what is the grace of God constraining us to do? And if we are saved by grace through faith… the gift of God… we represent Jesus on the earth… So what is His grace constraining us to do daily? I just want us to think about that…

My comment regards Islam vs. Christianity:
I know that Pastor Youngren does a great apostolic work among many nations of the world. His mission and mandate is to save souls. He would not be successful outside of unconditional love. However, we have to call the facts for what they are: Islam and Christianity are opposing entities. A young girl who was brought up Muslim, just came into my home and family. Within three days she began complaining that she does not like Jesus and I need to tone down my prayers, singing and speaking in tongues. I was not even conscious that she were affected (negatively) by these activities of mine, because I do them privately in the house. She complained to someone else. Then the next night she told me to my face that she does not like Jesus. Also I gave her a ride in my car, and as soon as she came in, without saying anything to me, she switched the radio from WDCX to another blaring music station. This she did twice. Now there are some people who were brought up in a Christian homes who also do not like Jesus - we do not accept them in this persuasion, so why should I turn a blind eye when Islamic people resist Christ?

The Truth Promised to Set Us Free
“If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” (John 8:31-32)
As we have seen, the Holy Spirit is promised as our guide into all the truths of God’s word. “When He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all the truth” (John 16:13). A related promise assures us that this truth will have a liberating impact upon our lives. “The truth shall make you free.” This promise of spiritual liberation through the truths of God’s word is such a vital one for man, because various forms of spiritual bondage threaten us all.
Everyone needs liberation from bondage to sin. Those who first heard this promise of Jesus needed instruction on this. “We are Abraham’s descendants, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How can you say, ‘You will be made free’? Jesus answered them, ‘Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin’” (John 8:33-34). This “whoever” includes us all, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). However, we can all praise God that His liberating truth can set us free from the bondage to sin. All who trust in the Lord Jesus are justified from their sins (declared righteous in God’s sight) through the redemption price of the blood of Christ: “being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God set forth to be a propitiation [satisfactory payment for sin] by His blood, through faith” (Romans 3:24-25).
The fear of death is another bondage from which people need liberation. Hebrews speaks of those “who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage” (Hebrews 2:15). What a tormenting bondage is the fear of death! Yet, Jesus’ liberating truth can deal with this bondage as well. “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?” (John 11:25-26). All who believe in the one who is resurrection life will live forever. Even if they should experience physical death, the grave has no grip on them. In fact, though their bodies may go into a tomb, they would go immediately into the presence of the Lord. “We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord” (2 Corinthians 5:8).
Dear God of truth, I rejoice in the freedom that comes through Your truth! Thank You for setting me free from the bondage of condemnation and judgment that I deserved because of my sin. I praise You for liberation from the fear of death. May I live victoriously by these truths and pass them on to others who need to be set free, in Your holy name, Amen.

PTL!
I have been following Pastor Youngren’s “Grace Discussions” on Grace T.V. I’m beginning to wonder if the prolonging of that subject is subliminal advertising for the channel/network.
There are some preachers in Christendom who are being ridiculed and rejected for preaching about prosperity - and it’s only because they spend so much time with the one subject. The prosperity of the saints is a valid Biblical subject; but when the critiques are done with those who preach the so-called “prosperity gospel” if you do not know the Word for yourself, you’d think that their message is pure heresy.
I said that to say this - Salvation by Grace through Faith is a valid Biblical doctrine, but an over-zealous presentation of it can cloud the truth. One cannot be too zealous for Biblical doctrines, but one’s presentations of his/her version of the Truth, can be misleading.
At this particular sitting, I do not have the time to go in details nor ask some questions that have been circulating in me concerning the words of Pastor Peter and his guests, but I’m praying for Grace T.V. and the excellent work of World Impact Ministries; and I know that I will eventually sit down and jot out my piece to this conversation.
In a capsule, I’d just like to say that no one can neither pay nor work for salvation - we do not have what it takes - the sinless blood of Jesus Christ. Yes, He died for all, and for all sins on Calvary; but this Grace will be of no benefit except the individual believe, accept, repent and grow (in grace). Now that’s the sum total of salvation - through Jesus Christ.
However, there is another vital factor in the “believer’s” life. (I’m deliberately leaving the “sinner” out of this part of the equation.) After they’ve become snug in their redemption, they need to labour to make disciples of (other) men, and build upon the Body of Christ - which is the Church. We are even instructed in the word of God to pray the Lord of the Harvest to send labourers to add to the few.
Now this is where I’m wondering if Pastor Peter is contending that:
1. Because of Jesus’ death everyone is already “saved”
2. Once you are “saved” you have nothing to do in the Kingdom of heaven
3. “Believe” does not denote any subsequent/particular action on the part of the believer
4. Because of God’s love for mankind, everyone is going to heaven
5. Because of God’s love and Christ’s finished work on the cross everyone who goes to Church, claiming to be Christian will be with Christ for eternity
Now because of the public platform of Pastor Peter’s ministry - internationally - I do not think that he’d answer “Yes” to any of the above… but some times his arguments sound as if he’s endorsing the above positions.
That’s all my time for now.. but I’ll come again…
Until then… God Bless Us All.
