It all boils down to the golden rule, or does it?

Written by Peter Youngren on March 13, 2010

Article for St Catharines Standard newspaper by Peter Youngren.

It’s a suggestion I have heard repeatedly, and just last week I heard it again; this time from a well-known Canadian media personality. “Every religion is the same; it’s all summarized in the golden rule, ‘Whatever you want that people should do to you, do so to them.’ Or the reverse, ‘Don’t treat anyone in a way that you wouldn’t want to be treated yourself’.”

I disagree. While almost all religions have a version of the so called “golden rule”, Jesus is uniquely different. The golden rule is sometimes called “the ethics of reciprocity”, and you’ll find it in the Bahai faith, Confucianism, ancient Egyptian religion, Hinduism, Islam, Jainism, native American spirituality even ancient Roman religion. From Zoroastrianism to Taoism, from Sikhism to Shintoism, yes, my friend had a point; all religion contains some version of the golden rule, but the Gospel of Jesus Christ – that’s a whole other matter.

The Gospel proposes it is humanly impossible to live up to the golden rule – no one can consistently and from the heart do unto others as they would want to be done to themselves. Jesus spoke the golden rule, but He did it in the context of a sermon for self-righteous religious leaders, who thought they were able to live up to God’s holy and righteous standard. Anyone scrutinizing the golden rule will recognize that we fall short, it is humanly impossible to attain. The Gospel of Jesus Christ is not about a doomed human effort to live up to the golden rule. Rather it is the Good News that one person has been able to keep the golden rule and live up to its demand, Jesus Himself. He fulfilled the requirements of his own admonition and having done so, He absorbed the failures and sins of those (the rest of us), who are not able to live up to the golden rule.

Every religion can be boiled down to the golden rule except the Gospel. Religion is man’s attempt to bridge the chasm between God and man. While man is the highest of God’s creation, God, who is eternal, is in a separate category from His creation. Many make attempts to bridge that gap from the created to the Creator, but the only way that bridge can be built is in the opposite direction. That’s the Gospel message – the bridge from the Creator to His creation has been built, God did it without human help for our benefit.

What about the golden rule? It is certainly an ideal statement. If we could live up to its requirements it would be wonderful. Have you tried? Do you like to be slandered, lied about, or be the object of gossip? Of course not. Let’s turn that around. Have we ever gossiped, slandered or lied about another person? Have we ever attempted to make ourselves look better at someone else’s expense? Of course we have. The problem with the golden rule is the mere statement of the rule, or the noble intention to follow the rule, does not have within itself the power to make one actually do it. The Gospel promises an inward miracle; when we believe in Christ, His life comes into us. It is only by drawing on that inner spiritual life that we will have any success in living righteous. The Apostle Paul put it this way, “It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me, and the life I now live I live by the faith of the Son of God.” Living by a rule is difficult; living by who you are on the inside, now that’s possible.

Nobody likes to be made a mockery of, so why would you settle for second best. Of course God did not make us so that we were not salvageable, he made it where we could as human beings come back to God like a child who has wronged his Father and in light of judgment will be excused. But some people fail to see that, they think that God wont denounce anything against them, oh it’s ok if we sin, but he will look at other things you did in your life time that you did was good and allow you into heaven, no . . .NO he did not say that, what he said was go now your sins are forgiven, it doesnt say anywhere that you can continue to sin, even though you did good previously. The Gospel promises an inward miracle; when we believe in Christ, His life comes into us. It is only by drawing on that inner spiritual life that we will have any success in living righteously.

Dear Peter,
I agree with the golden rule. I totally disagree with you.
Jesus said “If you want to enter eternal life keep God’s commandment and love God and your neighboor as yourself”
He even added “the one and only the one who observes all commandments to the end will inherit the Kingdom of God”
Dear Peter, I think you’re getting lost, you’d better go back to religion basics.
Speaking about Jesus is one thing but doing his will is the important.
Nothing else matters. Obedience to God Will is key.
Sorry Peter,

Amen, Peter, When I practice religion! im in bondage, feel restless and fail more than ever, life has no excitment at all, becauce of my inability to keep the golden rule. I thank Jesus for his love and protection. In the end it all comes down to your own personal relation with Christ Jesus, trusting in the lord that his holy spirit does lead and guide us in truth.
Peter I Praise God the ministry that God has blessed you with.
Thank you for opening peoples eyes so that we may see clearly! God bless
Sincerley

Your right on Peter.

Such good words.

Religion l agree with Peter is man trying to fill the gap.
Religion is mankind trying to find what he lost.man did not lose a religion but he lost Kingdom.he lost the relationship between him and the creator.
Jesus as a matter of fact did not bring religion, his gospel was about Kingdom, thats why he said, seek first the kingdom.
We should try to seek what we lost instead of seeking religion , as Religion is dangerous and thats why all of them can fight each other, this including Christianity too.

Thank you PASTOR PETER for enlightening us.  I know that as we study God’s word, HE reveals HIS truth, and we can all learn when a mighty man of God, like yourself, share what he knows because God speaks to each one and I am glad that you are bold to share it.
I pray that everyone will have the wisdom and understanding that they were originally created with and not be living in a fog of the world with scales on their eyes.
Thank you for being obedient to God.

Peter you have spoken the truth and that is why I support your ministry.  When will people understand that the Priests examined the sacrifices and not the people themselves and that Jesus was the only spotless, perfect, lamb that was slain before the foundation of the world so that whosoever would believe on Him would have the abundant life, not through any righteousness of their own, but because we are the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus?  It is the law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus that frees us from the law of sin and death, and not the other way around.  When I had a revelation of the Great Exchange that took place through the death, burial and resurrection of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ I came to know Grace as a Person and not just a theological concept.  I am a conduit who allows the Love of God that has been shed abroad in my heart by the Holy Spirit, to spill out to others.

I found it pretty amazing that you can talk to a hundred believers and get a hundred varying responses as to what the gospel means and what it takes to be truly saved.
I’m a young man that came from a life that would be considered   even to non-believers as wrong. I use to deal drugs, not because I’m an evil person or because I was trying to copy what media portrays to be cool. I did so because I fell into my own traps of depression and sorrow and then one thing lead to another and it became a way of maintaining. I’ve always had a desire for Christ so a few years ago when I heard of an event called Heavens Rehearsal in Toronto, I had to go. While at the event I made a deal with Christ and I said if you take all this from me, from here on in I work for you. A long story short I’ve been striving to press on and serve Christ the way I know best. God has been amazing to me and has blessed me continually. I now have a beautiful wife and a baby on the way. The point to all of this is that for the past four years now I’ve made mistakes, I’ve done things that are wrong, I’ve struggled with my faith and yes I’ve even sinned. It’s because of the grace of Jesus Christ our Lord and savior that I can stand firm and press on even with all my imperfections, and still know in my heart that He loves me and that one day soon I will be with Him.

Amen! Although it’s such a simple message, this perspective really opened up my eyes to this famous ‘Golden Rule’. Without Christ, we are completely incapable of living up to this standard of ‘treating others like you would like them to treat you’, but with Him- no matter how many times we directly/indirectly go against it, He’s more than willing to forgive us! Praise God :)!
Your messages are so encouraging, Pastor Peter, and I praise God for your life! I will be attending a service of yours at Broadway Church in Vancouver later this month, and I’m so excited to see what God wants to speak to us about!
God bless you,
Joti

very true, every religion talks about treating others with love and kindness. The word of God “JESUS CHRIST” help us to produce our thinking, take hold on our emotions, guide in our decisions and take appropriate actions. In Him we develop habits, christ like character that takes us to our destination, thus leads to prosperity.Spirit of God make the righteous so full that could be seen and experienced as self explainatory “To be dwelling in true love of Christ”.
God Bless you all.amen

I agree with Pastor Peter 100%!!!!
Christianity is about relationship with the only one (Jesus) who could pay the price for our sins.  Our own self effort or self righteousness is absolutely pride rearing its ugly head…...Paul addresses this issue of those who began in the Spirit and then tried to earn righteousness thereafter through the flesh…..May that not be said of us…...let’s begin and remain in the Spirit so our joy may be full, knowing that Jesus is our righteousness and always will be…....amen and amen…..

I fully agree to your interpretation.
Romans 8:2 - “For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.”

I’ve always found airplane flight amazing. Planes are so heavy, yet they fly! The pilot gets behind the controls, moves the throttle, those great engines begin to roar, and the first thing you know, you’re flying. Has the law of gravity been canceled? No, but there’s another law that comes into effect called the law of aerodynamics, which is greater than the law of gravity. When you get right with God, the law of sin and death is still there, but there’s a new law. It’s the law of life in Christ Jesus that sets you free from the law of sin and death. As long as you abide in Jesus Christ, then you are free from the law of sin and death.

Yes, Pastor Peter, you hit the target! It’s interesting that people take half the message and then stop listening, even when its in print. We all have a taste of the quote “Golden Rule”, however its because of Christ within you that fruit that is produced is righteousness that will be a by product of the “Golden Rule”. No one can effectually keep all the commandments by self effort your fooling yourself if you think you can. Jesus did say love thy neighbour as thy self, but how about when thy neighbour offends thee, and hurts you or steals something from you. How is your love displayed? Only Christs love can overflow our human spirit with an inner strength and produce forgiveness instead of bitterness. Only Gods grace can be the remedy.
We all applaud you Pastor Peter for being the one to stand in opposition to the Grace message!

When I first heard your message of Grace, I listened very intently, and rememberd what the Bible said on what you were commenting on and knew in my heart that you were right on…What a freedom…like being born again, again, The scriptures say “GOOD NEWS”  and it is wonderfull news…and it says you will be free indeed WOW
Thank you so much Peter… I just dont know how or why I had such a blockage of knowlage… and back when you first started up the Grace TV I had to get on board as a contributar, and said “Finaly someone from Canada is serouis about the Canadian population….

Bill

People talk about being Born again, again, That’s the way I’m starting to feel. While i have believed in this Massage of Grace for a long time. Where Paul in Romans 7 the last part says I want to seve God with all my Heart and mind But am pulled by the influence of to do something totally Different.the first part of Romans 8 in the Massage Bible, says with the arrival of Jesus the Messiah that fateful Dilemma is resolved. Those who enter into Christ’s being here - for - use no longer have to live under a continuous, low lying black cloud.A new power is in operation. The Spirit of life in Christ, Like a strong wind, has Magnificently cleared the air. freeing you (me) from a fated lifetime of brutal tyranny at the hands of sin and death. It goes on to tell us that Jesus really did it all.
Thank you Peter for letting simple people like me know that there really is away to live with out feeling guilty at the same time being free to come to him at any time of day knowing he has looked after the sin part. So that i now can enter in to a deeper life and walk with the one that i now know loves me. I will be 80 soon.

The golden rule is a great ideal for all people, especially for Christians. At least inside our families we should be able to follow the rule. Unfortunately even though we are followers of Jesus, having his life in us, we still fall short of His life. And a saddest thing in our behaviour is the reality that we hide or deny our failures as Christians. Often times we act like perfect indiviuals though we may have addictions, adultery… and what ever sin in our lifes. The sin is payed, but it has to be confessed and repented!

Hey brothers and sisters. We may disagree in some things, but let’s have peaceful and loving discussion. The devil will always try to cause us to have division and strife. We can’t let that happen. May we pray for each other and support each other. These internet message boards can be dangerous because you could say things anonymously. You could say nasty things that you would never say in public. Let’s have love in peace. God bless.

God bless you, Peter! I just came back from seeing you share the gospel at Calgary Life Church.  I was very touched by God’s love & grace with His message through you.
I was renewed and cleansed by His blood and given a vision for my life. More will be revealed!

Oh, I should comment on your blog…I totally agree that it’s an inside job.  Not by rules but by the law of love, Christ’s love burning in our hearts.

Dear Erkki
You do not need to confess and repent of each individual sin to remain saved. If that were true than salvation would be by works. If you add anything to grace it ceases to be by grace. Jesus said unbeliever’s are convicted of the sin of unbelief and believer’s are convicted of righteousness. Unbeliever’s don’t go to hell for sins. Jesus paid for all the sin of the world. Unbeliever’s go to hell for the sin of unbelief. There was some serious sin going on in some of the Epistles. Believers were told to change their thinking (repent) but they were never told to recommit their lives to Jesus. You can only be made righteous once. Concerning the work of the cross. Hebrews 9:26 says “But now he (Jesus) has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself.” Hebrews 10:14 because by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.
Hebrews 10:18 And where these (sins) have been forgiven, there is no longer any sacrifice for sin.
Don’t misunderstand me after you sin it is okay to admit it to God. Why not confess something like this “I confess I sinned and I am the righteousness of God in Christ because of Jesus’ finished work on the cross I am holy , blameless and even above reproach in the sight of God.” As we grow in grace we will rest in Jesus and let Him live His life through us. You said “The sin is payed, but it has to be confessed and repented!” Which sounds like your saying salvation is maintained by works. We are not even aware of all our sins.
Hope this helps.
God Bless

I think that when we are born again, God begins a work in us. He enables us to live like He meant us to live. So its His work in and trough us and not our work. For it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.  Phil.2:12. Our part is to do those things God works in us and to do them with His power. And if we fail even that, well He never stops living and working in us.
